Backyard Ideas

Not only is the inside of my house a constant work in progress.   The same thing goes for my backyard.

We have recently graduated from “Little Tikes” decor and swing sets to a fire pit and entertaining space.

I miss the fact that my children are not toddlers anymore, but I am not sad about the giant plastic sandboxes and climbing apparatus in neon colors no longer being part of my backyard decor!

But when we moved them out…I was looking for backyard ideas on a budget!

Here are a few Backyard Ideas that you might be able to use yourself!

Simple Backyard Ideas

The railroad ties were added during the “Little Tikes” phase.  I was so tired of weed-eating around all of the little pieces, so I created an area with railroad ties and playground mulch.  It was a great idea at the time. . . but, fast forward a few more years and we no longer have playground equipment.  Now what was I supposed to do with this area?

My first thought was to get rid of them and plant grass.  But, what are you supposed to do with 10 giant railroad ties?!  Do you know how heavy those things are?!  Not to mention, we had bought 2 too many when we did purchase them.  We had not known what to do with the extras then, so we just set them by the fence on the side yard.

I knew that I needed a plan B.  That is when it occurred to me that I could make a “patio” out there!

I moved the other 2 railroad ties (did I mention how heavy they were?!)  I got them as far as the gate and then I called on 3 of our teen boys from the youth group to help from there!

I had just seen in a magazine about planting boxwoods in containers, so I used the 2 extra railroad ties and the boxwoods to make a smaller area for our patio.

Yard Ideas

I added a little stone area to hold a table and planted flowers around it.

Then, I began to haul bag after bag of pea gravel to the house!

Next,I placed a phone call to my dad.

Me:   “Hey Dad, this is Melissa.  Are you up for a little project?”

Dad:  “What did you have in mind?”

Me:  “I was wondering if you could make an adirondack chair?”

Dad:  “I think I could do that.  Were you thinking about a couple for your front yard?”

Me:  “Actually, I was thinking about 5 for my backyard.”

Dad:  silence

Me:  “You still there?”

Dad:  “Did you say five?”

Me:  “Yes, one for everyone in my family.”

Dad:  “When would you like to have them?”

Me:  (doing a happy dance)  “Whenever you get them finished would be great!”

Simple Backyard

I used zip ties to secure some Christmas lights to the branches of the trees.  These are the big bulb Christmas lights. They really make the backyard feel magical!

Easy Backyard

We have been enjoying some great mild weather here in Murfreesboro, so we have really enjoyed this area so far this summer!

Did someone say, “S’mores!”

You can see my little playhouse is the back.

Yes, my dad made that also!  I told you he was handy!

My in-laws have a farm just a few miles from our home.  They have tons of rocks! So, we drove over one afternoon and loaded up with rocks to line the path to the fire pit.

This is a picture that my oldest, Daisy, happened to snap in the spring.  I thought it was too pretty not to include!  Nice work, Daisy!

  39. Hi! Love your firepit area you created and want to recreate it in our backyard. About what size is the area you used?
Thanks! You did a fabulous job! Love it!

  40. Love, love, love! I have had quotes for pavers and a concrete patio. I couldn’t make up my mind and now I see why. We are out right now getting all of the materials to replicate your patio! I am so excited. Thanks for sharing!

  41. I’m so happy I found this. I also have plans for a fire pit/outdoor family room this year. This is the perfect idea. We have a great side yard that is not doing anything so this is my answer.
The only thing we may do differently is to make a 4-5 sided hanging porch swing, swing set to sit around the fire instead of the Adirondacks. Love those, but my “old” body (heavy butt) can’t get out of the lowness of them. You can see the swing set idea on my Pinterest page. Probably under gardens, where this one will be too!!!

  42. You dad did an amazing job on your Adirondack chairs. Do you know where he got the pattern that he used?

    • He said that he looked at a few and just made it up as he went along!

  43. Shared about your wonderful space on my fb page today, Jenn Britt Design. Love it!!

  44. Lucky you! Your dad is very handy to have around! Mine loves to help in the yard and he is a blessing! Someday I will have the same set up as you, enjoy!

  45. I’m probably the only guy reading your blog…found it looking for back yard fire pit ideas for my new house. Yours is the most welcoming I’ve seen so far…..And I’ve had many similar calls from my adult daughter!

  46. I absolutely LOVE your back yard!!!

  47. trying to get an idea of how much pea stone you used. Just a rough estimate would be good . How many and what size bags. Thinking of having it delivered but not sure about how clean it will be. LOOKS GREAT!

  48. What kind of trees do you have surrounding the patio area? They create the perfect canopy for a patio. This backyard looks like the perfect place to sit with friends for a long time.

  49. Pretty! This has been an extremely wonderful article.
Thank youu for providing these details.

  50. How deep is your pea gravel?

  51. First off, let me just say how beautiful this space is! It inspired my family to do something similar. I was wondering if you have ever noticed an increase in bugs and or snakes in the area? My mothers best friend mentioned that may be the case, basing it off of gardens she’s done in the past. If anyone could shed some light on this subject that would be greatly appreciated!

  52. Hello there! I just stumbled upon your backyard from pinterest today and it seems I am WAY late or the party. It’s beautiful and I’ve been wanting to do this in my own backyard. I haven’t exactly been able to articulate what I want to my husband so thanks for giving me an example to show him. My question is about the lights. Did you already have electric outside or did you use an extension cord from the house? I’m just trying to figure out how to make the lights work in my yard and wondering if I should have electric ran outside. Thanks so much!!

    • I actually ran extension cords from my deck. I keep the cords wrapped up in flowers pots while they are not in use. Hope that helps!

  53. Love it! What type of trees are these? They create a perfect canopy.

  54. I had some big old trees removed from my back yard and then the stumps. All that work destroyed my big yard leaving no lawn. I thought it was a mess until now. I look at your pics and my back yard just came to life.
    Thank you
    This is a beautiful idea

  55. Melissa,

I love this. Quick question: Is the pea gravel around the fire pit too or is it sand?

  56. Love your backyard. I would love to do something similar. Would you be willing to share a supply list, the size of the area and the names of the stores where you bought the railroad ties?

  57. Hello….i just love your back yard….we are in the middle of working on ours. What kind of trees are those if you don’t mind me asking? They are the perfeFt size! Thanks.

  58. love this!! Can you tell me the type of “mulch” you used? Was it pea gravel or some other type of ground cover? Thanks. And awesome job!!

  59. Did you use mulch for the bonfire area?

  60. I would like to receive your emails

  61. I love the outdoor lighting up in the trees. It looks really nice. The great thing about outdoor lighting is not only how special it makes your yard look, but it is also good for security.

  62. How much would something like that cost just for the pathways And the fire pit areaAnd lights

  63. wow, stunning. i have no fire pit, anyway. but your pics are really inspiring me to create my own “paradise” at my home : )

  64. Beautiful backyard! What kind of trees are around the fire pit??

  66. I wish those new light bulbs were a tab bit more attractive. When you have a fixture and the bulb shows, I think it takes away from the look of it. I know it is better for energy savings. Sometimes I choose, rather foolishly, fashion over function. Our shoes are the perfect example of this right ladies?!

    • Many ways to dress the lights down or up, Emma. Colored plastic cups, sliced, paper or silicon muffin cups, etc.
As for fashion shoes, I tossed the bad ones years ago. Totally ruins the day/night/event and just not worth the pain, nor injuries.

  67. So very charming! I love the informality of it, and it looks like it’s easy peasy to maintain. Thank you for posting this, I was getting wrapped around the axle with too many suggestions that are far too formal and high maintenance preened for my yard.
