Backyard Fire Pit

Posted by on Apr 2, 2013 in backyard, boxwoods, playhouse | 75 comments

Spring is in the air.

I am itching. . .

 {literally, my nose and throat are itching due to blooming plants}

But my very being is itching to get out in my yard and get those projects done that I’ve been dreaming about all winter.

I’ve pinned things on Pinterest and flipped through countless magazines searching for the perfect ideas to make our backyard fire pit even more enjoyable and relaxing.

Let me give you a little tour of what we have so far…

and I’ll share my big plans with you! 🙂

Big plan #1:

I need to revive the chairs with stain or paint?

I still can’t decide?

I’m leaning towards stain.  I like the natural look.

Big plan #2:

Add a deck where the metal chairs are sitting.

And plant flower beds on each side full of mosquito fighting plants!

(Anyone know of some good ones?)

Big plan #3:

Host lots of s’mores parties. . .

…complete with movies projected onto the back of the house. . .

…lots of laughter. . .

…and loads of memories! 🙂

Life to the full!

  1. Alrighty, friend, I must know where you purchased the lights…they are fabulous! And…can they just remain outside in all weather or should they be protected. Love what you have done!

    • The lights are from Target Christmas clearance a few years back. I leave them up year round! I usually have to replace a few bulbs in the Spring when we are ready to be outside again. I just attached them to the limbs of the trees with plastic zip ties.

  2. LOVE this!! What is the material around the fire pit? crushed gravel?

    SO pretty!!!

    • It is pea gravel from Lowes. It took me several trips to get enough bags!

  3. You know, I’d mix stain and paint on those chairs. I stenciled a rocking chair for a friend for Christmas a couple of years ago with paint and then stained the rest of the rocker and it turned out awesome! Just a thought! I’ve always planted a lot of marigolds around my patio to repel mosquitos. There is a mosquito plant but I’ve never grown it. – Karen

  4. Your backyard is lovely! What a great space to relax and entertain too. I am partial to the grey stains that are out there, they give a gorgeous barnwood feel.

    xo, Tanya

  5. Melissa, it’s gorgeous already….come to Wa and help me get my patio in shape ok???? lol..PINNED THIS

  6. wow, such an amazing space!!! i love your plans for it, especially number 3. i’m coming!

  7. It looks beautiful! I cant wait to eat smores around the fire!

  8. Your yard looks like fun! Love the fire pit area-enjoy:@)

  9. Totally Plan on doing this in our backyard this year! Can’t wait!! It’s beautiful!!

  10. That is so pretty. That is what I want my backyard to look like.

  11. Oh I am so lovin’ your outdoor living space. We’re getting ready to re-do our outdoor space too and I’m pinning your backyard for future reference. So pretty! Love the lights.

  12. Such an inviting space for evenings, although here in Southeast Texas, we have very few evenings when we can actually enjoy the great outdoors. Those pesky mosquitoes threaten to haul us off. Ugh!

I vote to paint the chairs.

  13. SO gorgeous Melissa!!!
Paint the chairs ( I’m a paintaholic so the very last person on your list to ask lol ) but I see a big bold pop of color!
    Visiting from COMMON GROUND
    Have a wonderful wknd

  14. i think i have something pinned where it says mint or lemon scented stuff repels mosquitos? a deck there would be great, i’d love to add low decking to my space, which is just a table and chairs plopped right on the grass.

  15. Oh, my! Your backyard is so beautiful! Love the area around your fire pit too! Oh, to have a big wonderful back yard like yours!
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia 🙂

  17. Thanks for stopping by and commenting at Quirky Vistas. I’m always glad to see you were by. I adore your backyard. I’m a twinkle light fanatic and have them everywhere, so I’m loving your firepit area with the lights in the trees. So fun!

  19. I love this! It’s already way better looking than my backyard!
Id love for you to share this at our linky party !

  20. Everything looks so good and inviting. I specially love those lights hanging in the trees.
    Visiting you from Common Ground.

  21. I came via Redoux. Love the garden, especially the bud lights. BTW I’m visiting from Australia 🙂
There is a good mosquito plant the name of which escapes me (that’s helpful) its a type of geranium called something like “mozzie buster” but that could have been for the Australian market.

I had one near my screen door, the door hit it every time it opened, I never had mozzies in the house 🙂
If I had friends over for a BBQ I’d pull some leaves off and tear the up and scatter under the table. No mozzies!

  22. This is such a lovely, tranquil space! I love that the trees are forming a natural roof.

  23. Wanted to come by to say hello…it’s so very exciting to see garden posts again, winter has lasted way too long! Just wanted to let you know Fishtail Cottage’s Garden Party will be starting up again in May (Thursday May 2nd) Would love to have you come over and link up again and again! Hope you have a great weekend! xoxo, tracie

  24. This is lovely right now! I love the tree canopy and the lights…how I’ve been wanting lights like that in my backyard. Thanks for sharing:)

Found the above link with some interesting comments. In my experience the Mozzie Buster worked best…..there WILL be a US version I’m sure BUT you DO have to break off the leaves or at least shake the bushes every 10 mins or so to release the smell.

Perhaps surrounding the garden area with them and interspersing some citronella candles will work.

  26. What a fun idea to show movies on an outside wall.

    It all looks wonderful.

  27. We have done movies on the back of our house too. I LOVE your backyard…so beautiful with the trees and lights!

  28. You have such a beautiful backyard! Wonderful!
I’m visiting you today from Flamingo Toes. I hope you get a chance to stop by my blog and leave a comment and Link Up, too!

  30. What an amazing backyard retreat! I can see lots of summer parties here- and I would love to hang out too! 🙂 Found you at the Nifty Thrifty Things party. Have a great week!

  31. Love your backyard!! I say paint the chairs with a bold color like red or turquoise!! Your back yard looks like fun, let your chairs say that too!

  32. This is so inviting, I love it.
Citronella is the best for mosquito’s, you need to get it at a nursery early in the season as they always run out.

  33. Great work! looks like a fantastic place to relax!
I would love it if you shared this in my Furniture/House Hacks Linky Party:

  34. Oh this area all looks so inviting. Love it. Hugs, Marty

  35. Oh, this is so fabulous and I would love having a fire pit! Even at my age, I love roasting marshmallow!! I can’t wait to see what you do with the chairs.

  36. This is a gorgeous back yard!

  37. Love your firepit! And I’m going to have to read through all the comments now to see if you’ve gotten any good mosquito fighting plant suggestions 🙂

  38. You have a great back yard. I’m undecided as well as how to revive my table: stain, oil or paint? Maybe I’ll wait to see what you decide!

  39. Amazing space!! It is so inviting…looks like you have a nice sized yard. Mine is super tiny! I think you should paint the chairs:) Found you at Common Ground as one of the features.

  40. This is my first time to your blog and I’m loving it! Your backyard is awesome…so many creative ideas! I think a patio or wood deck would look wonderful where the metal chairs are! I like the rustic look of your Adirondack chairs, maybe just a coat of polyurethane? And your little garden house is so cute! I can’t wait to see what other plans you have this summer. And yes, the itching, as in nose and throat is terrible now!

  41. LOOOOVE your backyard! What an awesome space. 🙂
Your chairs would be fun painted different colors. I’m sure it’s been said, but lemongrass is supposed to keep mosquitoes away.

  42. I love your backyard!! I would be spending plenty of time there just the way it is! Happy Spring,Lori

  43. For all of those wondering about mosquito repelling plants, here’s a link to a great website listing several effective plants:
I live up north in Minnesota (the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” a.k.a. a mosquito’s perfect breeding ground – we continuously joke that our state bird is the mosquito! I am definitely going to plant some, maybe all, of these plants in containers for my deck. Good luck, ladies!

  44. It looks magical!

  45. Great backyard area!

  46. Hooray for spring! You’ve got a lot going on already…it looks lovely (love the lights, and the defined sitting area). I vote for painted furniture….but maybe the upkeep doesn’t appeal? Good luck with mosquito fighting plants…we have mosquito issues here too. Lynaea @

  47. Um yes — I do love your backyard! I need to know the mosquito fighting plants too! 🙂

  48. Melissa you rocked the place! It’s so atmospheric! Would you be interested in guest posting at my blog and feature this post? If so, shoot me an email.

  50. I LOVE this – determined to do this in our wasted side yard! Can you tell me approximately how much pea gravel this took? Thanks for the inspiration!

  51. Love this firepit and the pergola or arbor made by the trees. Just perfect and so relaxing. I actually have the perfect backyard for this and want to try to copy in the spring (hope you don’t mind?). Will have to send you a picture and see what you think. Plants that keep mosquitos away are basil, citronella, (which you can get citronella geranium from someone who sells herb plants)marigolds and zinnias. Basil is great! Marigolds and Zinnias keep other bugs away as well. Have fun and enjoy!

  52. I really like the look of this type of loose stone patio. We’re thinking about what materials we’re going to use and deciding between pavers and loose stone.

I do have a few questions for you. Is it stable and comfortable to walk on — do you kick up a lot of rock, get rocks in your sandals etc…? I’ve heard you can only use heavy wide based furniture, not so much regular patio furniture, what is your opinion? I’m just concerned that once we get all the work done, the stones will be too loose and not practical for our application (lounging, BBQing etc..).

PS: LOOKS GREAT! Thanks for sharing 🙂

  55. First off, let me just say how beautiful this space is! It inspired my family to do something similar. Wasn’t sure if someone might not see this comment on your older post, so I decided to post it again. I was wondering if you have ever noticed an increase in bugs and or snakes in the area? My mothers best friend mentioned that may be the case, basing it off of gardens she’s done in the past. If anyone could shed some light on this subject that would be greatly appreciated!
