We Southern ladies love our monograms.
Our mama’s are monogramming our sheets and hair bows from the day we’re born.
It’s just a Southern thing!
So when some of my fellow Southern bloggers decided to start getting together once a month for a series…
…{the “Oh My Word Would You Look At That!” series}…
…well it was just natural for us to start with MONOGRAMS!
So let me show you how to Make a Monogram.
but don’t forget to check out the 4 more that are listed at the end of this post!
Chicken Wire
Wire Snips
Floral Foam
Assorted Silk Flowers
Floral Pins
Floral Wire
Sharp Knife for Cutting Foam
Draw out a block letter the size you want your monogram to be.
Cut pieces of foam until they fill the monogram.
{It doesn’t matter if there are small gaps.}
Attach the foam together with floral pins.
Lay a piece of chicken wire over the letter.
Attach it in a few places with floral pins.
Snip the wire until it is just a couple of inches larger than the monogram.
Fold it around the foam.
Using the floral wire, wrap and wrap and wrap the wire around the entire monogram.
This will hold the chicken wire in place and really give the monogram the stability that it needs to hold its shape.
Now the hard part is done and the pretty part begins!
Cut the stems very short on the flowers and start placing them.
Keep adding flowers…
…and more flowers…
…and greenery…
…until your monogram is full.
And then find the perfect place for it to hang!
And that is how you Make a Monogram!
Now be sure to check out what these ladies have done with MONOGRAMS!
Check these amazing projects out!

Beautiful! I love all the colors, I need this on my front door! I may just have to make one, a “W” of course 🙂
Debbie
please send a picture of your W! I really want to do this too but I am not very crafty……
Melissa, I just love this idea and it looks amazing against that blue door. If I had to get married all over again ( thankfully I am not) this would be perfect with fresh stems too!,
This is gorgeous Melissa! You did a great job with shaping the S…I should make one! ~Sonya
That is just beautiful, Melissa! I couldn’t help but think how great that would look at a wedding.
I just love that! I was trying to think what to put on my studio/cottage doors and this is perfect. Now to get to a craft/hobby store. I live more than an hour away from any but it would be well worth the trip!
I absolutely LOVE this monogram, Melissa! It is SPECTACULAR! xo Diana
Melissa,
This is just gorgeous and oh so southern!!! ~Christy
I love your floral letter, it’s so pretty, it would make a great, very special gift for someone.
Wow, what other word could express how awesome, gorgeous, spectacular your monogram is, what a fantastic job you did. Did you have all those items at home already? You almost outdid yourself this time.
I’d so love to make something like yours, you seem to make things like that without any strain. Is making florals your specialty? Great job Melissa
This is so pretty! I can think of so many places to hang something like this in my home. It also is a great idea for a wedding or party!
I want one too! Gorgeous!
This is just breathtaking and what a fabulous job with your tutorial.I’d love to make one, but I just don’t see the letter P looking as great as your pretty S.
I pinned it for others to try!

It’s gorgeous, I love it! I came over from Pinterest and I’m sharing it on my FB page today also. 🙂

Nancy
Well, oh my word, would you look at that! It is absolutely gorgeous. My last name is Smith so I’ll take this one please lol! I’ll be pinning and shopping for flowers very soon!
Blessings, Deborah
Just Beautiful….the colors are fantastic…love it!
Gorgeous project and excellent tutorial! Since my budget is limited, I’m saving my Jo-Anne and Michaels coupons to gather supplies for future projects. I find that sometimes making things myself can get costly. Just curious what the cost was for this project?
Hi Melissa: Love this tutorial, so many uses for a floral monogram, birthdays, anniversaries, and of course weddings. I’m a professional floral designer and hope you don’t mind me suggesting a simple extra step to your excellent tutorial. Leave stems approx. 1″ to 1 1/2″ long (just as long as they’re shorter than the depth of foam) and prior to inserting, add a dab of hot glue to the ends and along the stems then press firmly into the foam. Try to avoid re-insertions as this will weaken the foam. Adding glue to the floral stems will lengthen the life of the wreath considerably. Think I’ll make one of these for an upcoming baby shower. Thanks for posting!
Melissa,
I am a New Fan and I Just Love what You have done here and
I will Share it with Everyone on My Page !! I Look forward
to Visiting You more.
Thank You
Lisa
I love it but I don’t understand how you added the flowers 🙁 Did you stick the stems through the foam or through the chicken wire? It really is stunning
I love everything about this site
Love this! I will be making me one! I am so glad to hear you won! You deserved it!
absolutely love your work and your instructions are very much on point. Can I ask for the W instructions I hope they are not to complicated. Thanks.
I love that S pretty colors
Well sadly this did not work for me the A wasn’t good. Thanks
So, since these are silk flowers, wouldn’t it be any easier just to use styrofoam? Cut the letter out of styrofoam glue it on cardboard for extra stability and use either glue. In my case I’d use my floral picks and cover the sides with moss.
Leah…if using silk, flowers, I would use a paper mache form. Hot glue and styrofoam is kinda funky….
What are the dimensions of the letter? I need to make an “A”. Thanks
I absolutely LOVE this idea!! So glad I can do a “Z” and not “S”. Haha!! Thank
You for the great tutorial.
H THIS is awesome! !! Thanks for sharing. Joycee

Love this idea! Please tell us the color of this light blue door paint??
Melissa, I just adore your monogram wreath. New to your site & just saw it. When I had a wedding business years ago, we used to make them often. We just used Styrofoam sheets cut into initial and glued flowers (using Elmer’s glue since hot glue tends to melt Styrofoam; newer low-temp guns may work ok though). I made one for myself a couple of years ago using a pool noodle and wire coat hanger to shape. My initial is C, so very easy but others would be simple too. Pool noodles are really dense so they really hold the flowers without gluing but you could still glue if you want. From one Southern Gal to another, I have to say you nailed it and certainly deserved the win. Go Girl!
