I live in a house right in the middle of the suburbs.
{Which happens to be perfect for my family right now.}
But. . .
I long to live in an old farmhouse,
on a bit of land,
in the middle of the country,
where you can’t see your nearest neighbor for miles. . .
Until then, I try to create inviting outdoor areas right here in the suburbs.
Here are 5 ideas for creating your own outdoor retreats.
My front porch isn’t large,
but it is big enough to house this wicker rocker,
complete with an old ironing board side table.
Perfect for my morning coffee.
leads to this sitting area,
complete with a pillow and quilt,
that is tucked right beside the playhouse that my dad built.
My playhouse houses all of my blogging treasures.
But, soon it will be a full fledged crafting space. . .
I created this deck with railroad ties and concrete blocks.
I made it in one afternoon!
My sweet golden loves to have people come and visit.
And, these birdcages make a nice entrance to my backyard.
A bit of reed fencing allows for a little more privacy,
and makes the perfect backdrop for some of my planters.
But, the place in our yard we enjoy the most is this fire pit.
Perfect for smores and family get togethers.
So, until I have my farmhouse in the country. . .
I will enjoy these little spaces in our yard.
Life to the full!

Love it all!
I love it. You have created a world there that feels secluded and lovely. I think it turned out great and what a fun craft spot that playhouse is going to make- xo Diana
I love seeing photos of your yard and home. They’re both very welcoming and cozy looking. You do such a great job of “fixing” your spaces up. Do the girls spend much time in your back yard? Looks like it’s a nice size for kids to play in.
I can remember before I got married again always being sure to rent a house with nice fenced in grass yard. My 3 older kids were pretty small then so they spent much time out in their yard. In those days people could let their kids play outside without having to worry about somebody taking them. I would spend time out there with them but didn’t have to hover. They played nicely together with their toys. Even tho their Dad wasn’t in the picture any more we still had many happy times. I’d fix things with plants, etc. to make it pretty for us all.
When are you going to make your storage shed into a craft room? That will be nice to keep the messes outside.
Enjoy your gorgeous yard and your sweet furry kid.
Following your blog is a special treat. Better than a magazine! Love your style! Warm and inviting and real.
Oh I think youi’ve done a fabulous job. I definitley feel like I am in the country in your back yard, so peaceful. Hugs, Marty
